Yeast Starter Help!
Hey guys! Maybe you can help answer a question I have. Here's my dilema:
I made my 1st starter on Thurs. I mixed 100ml with a 1/2cup of DME. Boiled it for .5hrs. I noticed some activity on Fri. but it wasn't very active. It never developed a high kraeusen. I don't have a stir plate so I shook it frequently by hand. Now everything is settled. I wanted to brew today so I'm wondering if it's still ok to pitch or have to start over.
Did I not use enough DME?
Can I save it by adding more DME?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
was it 100ml or 1000ml? If it was 100ml a half a cup of DME sounds very high. If it was 1000ml, I agree with Orion. Any activity=good. I have seen some starters that have no krausen but if you agitate the starter it releases lots of CO2, so fermentation is definitely happening.
Yes Eric it was 1000ml. My type-o! Good catch! Anyhow, I brewed yesterday & used my starter. Woke up today to an airlock that is going off! Thanks for all your responses! Great help from my Jedi Brew Masters!
Super glad to hear it all worked out great.

In a starter high Krausen usually happens so fast that you never notice it. If you saw any activity at all you are in good shape; use your starter and proceed.
FYI: Get a scale that reads grams. The easiest way to make a 1.040 starter is to use 10% by mass DME and the rest water (ie for a 1L starter put 100gms DME in your flask and fill to 1L with water). You'll always be consistent using this method. Also Google home made stir plates, super simple after-noon project that can be made for $30. You'll get significantly more yeast if you use one.
