Well, I finally had a bad batch. Worst yet, make that 2 bad batches. I put the second batch on top of the yeast cake from the first batch. The first batch doesn't taste good at all, nothing like a Red Ale.

The second batch has a dish water smell to it. It may clear up a bit. But the first batch is done, sewer water. I may put some in a bottle or 2 for the "Bad Beer" meeting.

I used yeast that was beyond its prime. I believe that is what caused the infection. Could have been something else, but is what I would guess. The yeast had been in frig the whole time.

It really sucks. Now I won't have any beer for June.

:? I've never heard of "old yeast" spoiling a beer... did you make a starter(first batch)? Did the beer ferment out, or was there a lot of residual sugar? Acidic? Oxidized? Horseblanket?

I did make a starter. The first batch did ferment out. I think the FG was 1014.

what is Horseblanket? Never heard of that.

It would be nice if someone else could try it and let me know whats wrong. or what I did wrong. Process is the same as I always do. I can't think of anything different that I did or tried.

Does the beer smell/taste like "wet dog", also described as "horseblanket" or "barnyard"? If so you might have a wild brett infection which could mean having to replace all plastics that have come in contact with the bad beer.

Bring it to the next meeting. Andy said he was looking for some infected beers to do some analysis on.

Do we have to wait that long? I am brewing again tomorrow. I would hate to infect 20 gallons of beer.

Andy, Call me at 951-206-4894. I need to go out in the morning to get propane, again. Can't wait to switch to NG.

The easy answer is replace all things that are not glass or stainless steel in your stystem. All tubing buckets ect.... And then just starilize the hell out of what ever you have left.

That's not an easy Answer. Actually, I believe I can replace everything that touched the beer from the kettle to the carboy. Actually not really that much.

I do gravity into the carboy using a food grade tubing that I get from Home Depot.

Replacing Racking cane and tubing will suck, but I was eying the Stainless one any ways. The tubing is getting old anyways, was used to transfer the beer from the carboy to the keg.

I have never used the stuff from home depot, however I have heard of off flavours being produced from food grade tubing. This is just heresay mind you and never tested by myself. I use the tubing from The Beverage Factory, this is the tubing that most bars use and find that it works great for me. I am swinging by there today to pick up 50ft of Gas line. If you need me to grab some beer line let me know.

I personally love my racking cane. I use that, some tubing and my mouth to start my syphon and have never had an issue.
