Cancer Relay - Saturday 4/24/10
Okay my Homebrew Brothers...the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is this weekend from 9am on Saturday until 9am on Sunday. I have started a team by the name of Pop’s Peeps in honor of my Pop that died of cancer in August of 2008.
The relay is not a race, per say, but over 40 Team’s having their Members taking turns walking around a track for 24 hours strait. Funds are raised in lump sum donations from people & businesses thru out the local community and also from Family & Friends of Team Members. Most of the donations have been made online thru our Team’s webpage or the various Team Members personal webpages linked thru the Team webpage. The web address for the Team is as follows:
http://main.acsevents.org/goto/PopsPeeps
Team Pop’s Peeps has been fund raising all year & will continue fund raising during the relay itself. I am asking the TVHA Members for their support and assist us in raising more funds by visiting the Relay on Saturday and purchasing Carne Asada or Chicken tacos that we will be selling from 11:00am till people stop buying them. We will be selling them again in the evening hours for dinner as well. Online donations are always welcomed too!
Another fund raising effort we will be doing is the “Miss Relay” contest at 12:30pm till 3:30pm on Saturday. Basically, a “Male” Member of the Team will be dressed up as a female and walk the track. Along the way, they will collect donations from the on lookers. The contestant that collects the most donations, will be crowned “Miss Relay”! Who will be OUR Team’s Miss Relay? Stay tuned....
A very beautiful & touching ceremony will take place at 9pm on Saturday night. It is the Luminaria Ceremony. A long line of decorated bags with candles in them will be lit as moving speeches are read and a heart touching slide show is displayed. You too can purchase a Luminaria bag ($10) thru the website (http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY10CA?sid=1014&type=f...) and credit for your purchase will be given to Pop’s Peeps at your request. You can also purchase them at the Relay itself until about 7 or 8pm. Luminaria bags are purchased to Honor those that have lost their battle, or for those that are still battling, or even for those that have WON their battle.
Thru out the day, there will be various bands playing & activities going on. The ACS/RFL webpage (http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY10CA?sid=1003&type=f...) has a full schedule for you to view.
The whole event is located at Town Square Park in Murrieta next to the Library. It’s basically located on the South West corner of Jefferson & Kalmia. The event is completely fenced in for security. If you plan on visiting & supporting Team Pop’s Peeps, please print out the waiver form at the following link (http://relay.acsevents.org/site/DocServer/Youth_Waiver.pdf?docID=122668) and bring it with you. This will speed up your entrance (no charge) so you don’t have to wait in line then fill it out at the gate.
If you REALLY feel like getting involved, sign up ($10) on the website or at the gate as a Team Member of Pop’s Peeps. This will allow you to stay over night within the grounds (bring at least a sleeping bag, but a small tent would be useful too). Otherwise, all non-team Members must leave the grounds at 10pm until around 7 or 8am the following morning for overnight security. During those hours, only those with wristbands may pass thru security at the gate.
Pop’s Peeps is looking forward to seeing TVHA support at the relay.
Ciao,
JIMI
a.k.a. Pop’s Son
It's 24 hours ya know....
I'm also doing the first speech of the closing ceremonies on Sunday morning this year.

You going to drink beer in the trailer again this time? We have a memorial service to go to, otherwise you know we'd support you.
